AI Limitations & What to Know
Gotique uses advanced AI to analyze your antiques from photographs. While powerful, AI-based analysis has inherent limitations you should understand.
Photos Only — No Physical Examination
AI analyzes only what it can see in your photographs. It cannot assess weight, texture, smell, or sound (the "tap test" used by ceramic experts). Items where physical properties are essential for authentication — such as jade, ivory vs. bone, or solid vs. plated metals — may receive an 'Uncertain' assessment.
Camera Quality & Lighting Matter
The accuracy of any AI analysis depends on the quality of the input. Poor lighting, out-of-focus images, or low-resolution photos reduce the AI's ability to identify details. For the best results, follow our photography tips guide.
Provenance Cannot Be Verified
The AI can read and interpret visible provenance clues — labels, stamps, gallery stickers, auction lot numbers — but it cannot verify that documents or certificates are authentic. A photograph of a certificate of authenticity is not the same as a verified certificate.
Sophisticated Forgeries
High-quality forgeries that pass visual inspection by experts will likely also pass AI analysis. The AI identifies stylistic consistency, period-appropriate materials (as visible), and construction methods, but it cannot detect forgeries that require laboratory analysis (e.g., thermoluminescence dating, X-ray fluorescence).
Value Estimates Are Ranges, Not Appraisals
Market value estimates are informed by auction records and market data, but they represent a probable range — not a certified appraisal. Actual market value depends on condition nuances not visible in photos, current demand, provenance documentation, and the specific sale context (auction vs. dealer vs. private sale).
Not a Substitute for Professional Appraisal
For insurance coverage, estate planning, tax purposes, charitable donations, or legal proceedings, you need a certified professional appraiser. Gotique is a powerful first step for screening, education, and curiosity — but it does not replace a hands-on expert evaluation for consequential decisions.
What 'Uncertain' Means
When the AI marks an item as 'Uncertain', it means the available photographic evidence was insufficient for a confident authenticity determination. This is not a reflection on your item's value — it's a signal that you should seek an in-person expert opinion. Common causes: poor photo quality, unusual or rare items, items requiring physical examination.
